The 4th of July Celebration is just around the corner which means fireworks (if you live in an area that allows it).  Your dog’s best friend during this time may be one of the two products that are proven to help with dog anxiety – Thundershirt and Rescue Remedy.

Thundershirt - Dog Anxiety Treatment

The Thundershirt is recommended by professional dog trainers and veterinarians around the world. It works by providing a gentle and constant pressure that soothes your dog, perhaps it feels like a big hug to them!  See some amazing before and after videos here.

Rescue Remedy calms anxious dogs

Rescue Remedy is an all-natural  blend of five flower extracts that help support calm behavior.   Great for dogs who dislikes pills  as it comes in a dropper which makes it easy to administer to your dog. You can either add 4 drops directly into your dog’s mouth, add 4 drops to their food or it can also be rubbed on the nose, mouth or ears of your dog.

With Spring in full swing and Summer just around the corner, the warm weather has been a huge factor lately with our two Shibas.  Our daily walks are starting earlier to make the most of the cooler morning, and the heat has been forcing our poor little Mochi to take frequent shelter under the shade during our walk, and our nightly walks are occurring way past our dinner time.  In between and throughout the day, Gido and Mochi are in the house, chillin’ on their new dog cooling pad.

Keep your dog cool with the Cool Pet Pad

When we return home from our walks, instead of going to their bed or favorite spot to rest, Gido and Mochi have been going to our kitchen to spread out on the tile floor.  We found Mochi one afternoon in our tub (no water of course)!  I soon realized that our two boys were just doing all they could to stay cool, and I wanted to do my part to help them.  After a little research, I found a company named The Green Pet Shop that makes a cooling pad for dogs called the Cool Pet Pad.  We recently received our Cool Pet Pad, and it is honestly one of the coolest things we ever got for our boys.

The Cool Pet Pad uses patented technology that brings together a proprietary cooling gel and cutting edge design that is safe, and stays dry and cool for a long time.  It is essentially a gel pad like the ones you would put in a cooler to keep your drinks cold, but on steroids!   However, no refrigeration or water is necessary.

Comparisons with and without the cool pad

The cooling effect is activated by pressure or weight, lasts for three to four hours, and will automatically re-charge itself.  When activated, the pad feels similar to sitting on cold tile floor in an air conditioned room, but a lot more comfortable! Now, these claims seem pretty lofty but trust me, it was very hot this weekend – in the 90′s and humid, and the dog cooling pad has exceeded all of my expectations.

Thanks to the hot weather, the dog cooling pad has quickly become a favorite of Gido and Mochi.  It is the first place they go to after their walks, and they stay on the pad for most of the day.

As dog lovers, we are responsible for providing a safe and healthy environment for our four-legged family members, especially in the coming warm months.  Along with providing water and shelter, why not take it several steps further by providing them with a place they can go to cool-down.   A dog cooling pad could just that.

How cool is your dog?

Mochi enjoying his Churpi Chews

Every night after finishing their dinner,  Gido and Mochi are given treats to enjoy. Typically they’re given lamb, duck or chicken breast,  but on occasion they’re given chew treats to help clean their teeth between brushing. I decided to give them Churpi Chews since it’s been a popular treat of choice for our customers this week.

Yum..this tastes good!

I love that it’s all-natural (made of milk, salt and lime juice and for some reason reminds me of one of my favorite candy as a child called horlicks),  but most of all, it lasts long and it  kept them busy for awhile.

Spring is here. What better way to enjoy the season  then with a trip to the open water, the beach, the pool, and lake or river.  For dog lovers who incorporate water activities in their life, flotation life jackets for us are a must.  The same should apply for our four-legged family members.

Some of the most common breeds such as Labs and Goldies were engineered to love the water, while other breeds like our two Shiba inus require a little persuasion.  Regardless of what type of dog or dogs you own, if you love the water, your dogs will eventually love the water too.

Swimming comes natural for dogs – almost as natural as walking or running, and is a great form of exercise.  Hydro-therapy has also been proven to greatly improve a dog’s recovery from injury or anxiety, and you can’t forget the resulting bond that is strengthened between you and your Pooch.

Needless to say, the benefits of incorporating water into your dog’s active lifestyle are well documented.  Your dog could be the Michael Phelps of the dog-swimming world, but you can never be too safe when it comes to water.

Some pointers to remember:  Never leave your dog unattended around water, and always have your dog wear a dog life jacket if you and your family are planning on enjoying the water for an extended period of time.

When looking for the best dog life jacket,  consider  the EzyDog Seadog Flotation Vest or the Kurgo Surf N Turf Life Vest.  Quality construction incorporating high-buoyancy materials such as foam or rubber, water-repelling materials like neoprene or nylon, and multi-functioning features such as carry handles or D-Rings are similar in these two.

Dog flotation jackets are also ergonomically designed to fit dogs of all sizes, and allow for full range of motion when walking, running, or swimming.  Sizing a dog floatation vest is also easy.  Your Pooch is fitted correctly if the vest spans the entire length of the back from the base of neck to the base of the tail.  The vest should also wrap completely around the chest and belly, or have at least three attachment points on the underside of the life jacket, not only to keep your Pooch comfortable, but also to ensure a safe and secure attachment that prevents your Pooch from slipping through the jacket.

Dog life jackets like the Doggles Flotation Jacket take it one step further by adding a flotation pillow that conveniently and securely attaches to the underside of your dog’s neck, preventing your dog from dipping its head below the water surface.

If your Pooch enjoys the water as much as you do, get them a dog life jacket.  There are a dozen or so good brands out there that are actually affordable, so finding one for your four-legged love one will be easy.
